Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L)
Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) is one of 10 electric companies that are part of the investor-owned First Energy company. As a whole, the First Energy company is one of the largest in the United States, serving over 6 million residential, industrial and business customers over 67,000 square miles. While First Energy is headquartered in Akron, Ohio, its subsidiary electric companies reside in and serve Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey. GPU, Inc, which owned Jersey Central Power and Light, merged with the First Energy company in 2001.
JCP&L is part of the NJ electric choice program which came about in 1999 when energy deregulation in New Jersey began. Energy deregulation in New Jersey allows customers to shop for an alternative NJ electric and gas supplier and lower their utility bills.
The best way to lower your NJ electric rates is to know what questions to ask when you start shopping around. The top questions to ask your prospective NJ electric and gas suppliers:
- Is the rate fixed or variable (fluctuating)?
- Is there an early termination fee or cancellation fee?
- Are there any other incentives, promotions, cash back offers?
The NJ electric choice program gives New Jersey electric customers the ability to pay less for the same energy while JCP&L still delivers the power, handles billing and provides any maintenance and service needs as it always has.
